Tottenham number game in Hong Kong

August 1 – Tottenham did something a little different for their clashes with Arsenal at the Kai Tak Hong Kong Stadium and that had nothing to do with the new manager, Thomas Frank, Tactical Tweak. The North London rivals were shed outside of England for the first time, but it was a shirt number that attracted attention.

Spurs assigned the ‘parents’ of Hong Kong artists’ to design the numbers ordered first that adorn their shirts for this one time.

Parentssparents are collectives that combine graffiti with geometric illustrations and they create clothing numbers that aim to capture the “unique city charm” of Hong Kong. Their brief is to combine the existing Tottenham typography with night rhythm and typical cultural rhythm. Whether it is translated into better football still needs to be seen, but of course more imaginative than the chances of other serving training photos.

The artists consider their work to represent the combination of Eastern and Western aesthetics, which sounded right for cities that were spent centuries as meeting points between the east and west.

Tottenham Asian tour is part of a broader strategy to build their global brand, and initiatives like this, they think outside of the “Turn Up, Play, Leave” approach which is common that interferes with so many pre-season tours.

The temporary nature of these artistic numbers may seem like the opportunity to be missed, but actually quite smart. Create something unique, produce buzz on social media, make a local press talk, then continue. Classic modern football marketing and the opportunity to sell more jersey.

It is unclear whether the shirt helped spur in the North London Derby but they had a 1-0 victory.
