Not only ancient Radeon GPU, but Linux open source developers also continue to work to provide the patch needed to improve performance throughout the latest GPU. The new patch added to the 3D Mesa graphics library will now bring improvements to RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 GPU, as reported by PHORONIX. These patches are related to RADV (Vulkan Radeon Driver) and have been combined into GIT Mesa repository.
The valve contractor, Natalie Vock, provides newer optimization in front of the freezing of the Mesa 25.2 code, which will improve the Ray search performance of this GPU. Patch mentions GFX11 and GFX12 ID, which matches the Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3) and GPU Radeon RX 9000 (RDNA 4), and according to notes, the two GPU series must see a better Ray search performance in the game.
According to internal testing, the Radeon RX 9000 series is able to provide a 14% improvement in Quake II RTX, and we can see the same results in different titles. This improvement is reportedly working for the two GPU series, further closing the gap between NVIDIA and AMD GPU in the Linux operating system.

The new patch contains special GPU instructions such as ds_bvh_stack_rtn for rdna 3 and ds_bvh_stack_push8_pop1_rtn for the RDNA 4 series. This low -level hardware instruction handles Ray search and will optimize how BVH is crossed on the GPU. With such improvements, we will see a reduction in memory operations and therefore, better efficiency.
PHORONIX had previously shown an increase in Ray’s search performance with Radeon RX 9070 with MESA 25.2. With newer patches, people must expect more improvements with RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 GPU.
