Richard Mark Alter, Real Estate Executive, Dead

Richard Mark Alter, President and CEO of Manekin, a real estate investment company, management and operation, who is a prominent Lacrosse player, died of a Cardio-Genjal-July 17 failure at Gilchrist Care Towson. Harbor East residents are 81 years old.

Born in Baltimore, he is the son of Irving Alter, a lawyer who has a whitelock Realty Co., and his wife, Lucille. He is a graduate of Baltimore City College 1962 and won a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brown University, where he excels as a Lacrosse goalkeeper.

Mr. Alter serves in the Air Force as a medical officer and helps give birth to babies at the Andrews Air Force base. He was a 1970 graduate from the Faculty of Law at the University of Maryland.

He joined a mannequin company in 1971 and oversees the company’s operations, including the development of more than 20 million square feet industrial property in Hampton, Virginia, Annapolis and Howard and Frederick Counties.

“My father worked until the day he died,” said his son, Zach Alter. “He has his own style. He is good and cool. He always says that people never work for him. They work with him.”

Thomas Bozzuto, a developer and close friend, said: “He always carries a new idea, a thought that you do not consider. He brought him with a twinkle in his eyes. But that you know can be trusted. Richard is a first -class real estate developer. But much more than that, he is a good and iconic man.”

Donald Manekin, a former Manekin Corp., said Mr. Alter shared his vision with James Rouse about Columbia’s commercial real estate potential.

Mr Manekin also said, “Richard also brought understanding of the 21st century to finance by creating relations with institutions such as Copley Real Estate Advisors in Boston and Mercantile in Baltimore with our company.”

Mr. Alter works widely in Columbia along the Gateway Drive and at Upper Marlboro at Prince George’s County at the National Capital Business Park.

He served in the Council of Council of Advisory Institute for the Heart Institute of Johns Hopkins, Sinai Baltimore Hospital, Camp Shoresh, Beth Tfiloh Congregation, Baltimore City Housing Partnership, Levindale Hebew Geriatric Center and Hospitals, Elijah Cummings Youth Programs in Israel.
