Baltimore reporter Sun Orioles Jacob Calvin Meyer will answer fans’ questions every Friday during the baseball season. The following is JCM’s thoughts about some questions from readers:

How do the core players respond to the lack of success this year? Do they ask for accountability and is there a sense of optimism in Clubhouse that they will return to win the baseball next year? – U/lazy_pasenger7841 in Reddit
This is one of the many great questions from my Reddit “Ask anything” on Thursday. Some questions are about young core – how they handle this disappointing season and whether there is a reason for concerns about the future of the group.
How they played even more important than what they said, but some comments from Jordan Westburg and Adley Rutschman – two players who had to lead Clubhouse move forward – indeed hitting nails on the head.
Westburg at the young core needs to step: “The role of leadership falls to us now. [Holliday]Cowser, we have to take it. We understand that Clubhouse is now in a place where we have been prepared and somewhat prepared to take over and now the time. So, I think we have to wear our big boys and lead this clubhouse for the past two months of the season. “
Ritschman about the importance of playing well the rest of the season: “Mentality for us has not changed. I think, if there is, only a fact where we now have to motivate more men than before to go there and play as hard as they can.”
There are aspects of this game that require players and coaches to ask for accountability to each other, but that might not happen here. This is not like there is a lack of efforts for these players. In fact, Colton Cowser and Westburg were both injured because of too many efforts.
It is clear that this season is very difficult in young core. Gunnar Henderson, Cowser, Rutschman and Westburg are all injured. Cowser and Adley have not done their hopes. And these players hate losing – and they are not used to it.
Should there be worries about young core? Yes and no. Individually, there is still a reason for optimism for each group member. But overall, the group may be worthless as ever understood. The big question for 2026 is: Can You Young Core Improve and Bring This Team to the Playoff and In Running Posseason?
What do you associate with the lack of general power of Gunnar Henderson this season? – U/czm6626 in Reddit
There is one metric in Baseball Savant that explains why Henderson hit fewer Homer – and it was in harmony with what we all saw with our eyes.
Henderson did not lift the ball as much as this season. The percentage of sweet spot launch is ranked only in the 14th percentile in MLB. So far the worst offensive metric on the Savant page. StatCast considers the launch angle between 8 to 32 degrees as “sweet spot” – aka the type of launch angle that produces the best results – and Henderson has produced only 30.9% of time. Last year, that level was 54%.
Henderson said that his swing came out of the blow if he tried too hard to hit the homers. It’s hard to be too disappointed with a man who entered Thursday with 0.821 Ops. The total home run last season (37) may be near the upper end of what he will achieve in his career, while in total this year (at a speed of around 18) it will almost certainly become a low end. His career 162-game average HR Total is 30-and seems right for the type of Henderson beating is, even if the year to year may not be stable.
What kind of reshuffle planned by the organization for offseason? – U/Gottagetintosomethin in Reddit
ORIOLES General Manager Mike Elias traded nine main league players ahead of the deadline, and the results of the prospects he got in return were very impressive. The four players he handled were under the control of the team until 2026, and the return for most of the players was very good.
However, Elias had dug up his own hole. This is the guess in the offseason checklist:
- 2-3 initial pitcher
- 3-5 pitcher assistance
- 1 Infielder Utility
- 1 Middle Fielder
And that does not include the depth of extra assistance and maybe other outside players. If the front office intends to win in 2026, one of the options is to add one ton of the main league caliber players. If it is not clear by watching the team for the past two weeks, this list is lacking in and talents outside of the initial some pitcher and young core.
Are there indications that they plan to make a significant acquisition of pitching on offseason? Or will they wait until February and sign the 30s Pitcher? – U/Moonlightmile5719
This is my answer to a similar question at our Orioles round table after the trading time limit:
The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. That is why judging this front office is very difficult. Will Elias handle this offseason as he did ahead of the 2024 season when he pushed his chip into the middle to get Ace Corbin Burnes? Or will he try little by little rotation with a low ceiling starter on a one-year contract as he did in 2025?
The possibility is that Elias wants to avoid the last and reach the first, and that is why he initiated the sale of this trading deadline to increase the depth of his agricultural system.
It would be surprising for Elias to enter this offseason without a plan to make a significant addition of pitching considering how last year it has passed and how important this winter is for the organization.
Do you think Orioles will try to sign Kyle Tucker or Kyle Schwarber at a free agent? – u/repooc21 on reddie
No. Tucker will get $ 400 million or more at a free agent, and it will not come from Orioles. Schwarber will not be expensive, but he also does not match this list. With Rutschman and Samuel Basallo, it does not make sense to have a permanent pointed bat.
If Orioles gets bats in the middle of this offseason, it is likely that it will be someone else besides both. This will help if that person can also play a midfield.
Are there rumors about extension? Elias needs to know that signing any extension, even Rogers, will give him a lot of good intentions from fans. – U/loose_log_6253 in Reddit
There are no rumors of extension because there is no discussion or because this front office is probably the most stringent in baseball.
The assumption at this point should not have an extension because it never existed under Elias. Because he took over as GM in November 2018, Orioles was the only MLB team that had not yet signed players for a four-year contract extension guaranteed. For the past two years, Boston Red Sox, a rival of the American Eastern League in a playoff fight, has signed Brayan Bello, Cedanne Rafaela, Kristian Campbell, Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet.

Regarding the good intentions of fans, it’s fair to say it’s something that Elias might not care too much – good or bad. Fans are right to care about the extension and uncertainty of their favorite players to be rivals several years from now. But Elias won’t do something just because it will make a fan base happy.

Opportunities for the percentage of Basallo are close to 100% as long as they remain healthy. There are many online discourse about that prospect and why they haven’t been in Baltimore.
Orioles’ potential draft pieces can accept if you win the Al Rookie of the Year award in 2026, of course, is a factor, especially for Basallo. The earliest player can be promoted to the department and still maintains novice eligibility for 2026 is August 15. So Beavers and Basallo Watch officially begin Friday.
However, players must enter the season on two lists of the main 100th prospects. Basallo is 15 prospects for top consensus, but Beavers is the Top 100 on one list (Baseball America). Beavers’ opportunities are the top 100 on two lists and win the small Al Rookie of the Year award, but they look big enough for the club to sacrifice MLB-BATS worth two to three weeks for Beavers.
Nunez is interesting. Honestly, why not? If he dominates Triple-A in the same way he does it at every other level this season, what is the danger of bringing it in September? Nunez is a 5 draft rule that meets the offseason requirements, which means that he must be added to the list of 40 Baltimore people to protect it from being chosen. The 24 -year -old man is one of the most interesting prospects obtained by Orioles in the deadline. The slider is evil, and there is a lot of meat left in the bone for a man who just started throwing in 2024.

We don’t know. Tony Mansolino’s comment – “I am not ready to share, but I will discuss it and we will find out what we want to share with you, but there is no” – surely raising eyebrows, but there is no utility in speculating what can happen. Hopefully the team will immediately give an update, and hopefully everything is good with Kjerstad.

Let’s assume that against the right hand throwing, and let’s make two lines of one-one with Bradfield and one without. He will not be on the list of opening days, and it is not a guarantee that he even debuted in 2026. Also, let’s assume (for the ease of making a lineup) that they did not add caliber players early this winter.
