July 18 – Manchester United fans were arrested more than other clubs in this country last season, according to data from the new home office that brought back memories of the problem of hooliganism that damaged the club in the 1970s.
The numbers, published on Thursday, revealed that United supporters took the top of the capture charts with 121 incidents in 2024-25, surpassing the local rivals of Manchester City (94) and West Ham (77). 49% of United’s arrest occurred in home matches, with 34 related to public disorders or violence.
West Ham, who has led the arrest statistics for three consecutive seasons, went down to third place. Arrests related to football as a whole fell 11% to 1,932-first decline since fans returned post-Pandemic. However, the reported incident soared 18% showed the problem of spreading rather than concentrating.
The most alarming is the Spike in Hate Crime Reports-420 incidents in all matches, the highest since the record began in 2017-18. Of these, 287 related to race, 140 for sexual orientation, with disability and gender identity is also targeted. These figures represent a 23 percent annoying increase of 341 incidents of 2023-24.
The arrest related to drugs now contributes 19% of all cases, up from 9% in 2022-23 when class A ownership is a violation of schedule 1. Public disorders remain the most common cost at 32%.
Orders for the ban have reached 2,439-high since 2012-13. West Ham led with 112 supporters prohibited, followed by United (108) and Chelsea (80).
“The police up and down in the country work very hard to ensure the soccer stadium is safe,” said Police Minister Dame Diana Johnson. “Today’s statistics show that this effort has produced strong results and actions to be taken to stop violence and chaos from damaging football.”
While the current problem is pale compared to systematic violence in the 70s and 80s, the trend demands vigilance so that the darkest period of football is back.
