Microsoft Software at Mega Hack Juli rely on Chinese Support Teams

Microsoft’s historical cyber security violations last month, who saw the sharepoint software which was potentially exploited by Chinese hackers to install backdoors, relying on customer support from the Engineering Team in China, revealed a new report from Propublica. Sharepoint violations occurred on the commemoration of the Crowdstrike blackout last year, which, according to official reports, occurred because of the wrong software patch. However, as opposed to last year’s blackouts, Microsoft linked the sharepoint violations with the Cyber attack group sponsored by the Chinese state.

In a new report today, Propublica claims to have seen Microsoft’s internal communication system to determine that the technical team based in China is carrying out support for its sharepoint software. Sharepoint allows users, usually organizations, to manage internal networks and link their computers. July violations see the attackers get control over the software server, which gives them the ability to install invalid software to them and the back door for future access.

Violations have affected the SharePoint version originating from 2016, with media reports showing that the US federal agent also saw their network compromised during the attack. While Microsoft was originally caught red -handed, the company finally identified other sharepoint vulnerability that could pose a threat in the future but was not exploited at the time of discovery.

According to today’s report, the Engineering Team based in China repairing bugs for SharePoint software, which allows users to operate it on their own devices. Called ‘Onprem’ as short for ‘in place,’ this software is the center of attack last month. While Microsoft did not recognize the existence of the Chinese Engineering Team in its official statement released after the attack, the company confirmed to Propublica that the team existed.

Microsoft added that the team “was supervised by an engineer based in the US and subject to all the security and review requirements of the manager’s code. The work has been going on to divert this job to another location.”

The presence of China in American and Western technology infrastructure has been a controversial problem for many years since the first Trump reign has pressed Europe and NATO to stop integrating Chinese technology giant equipment Huawei into its network. The concern originated from the 2017 Chinese law which requires companies and others in this country to comply with the request for cooperation between the state.
