When I started university in 2023, I wanted to do volunteerism, but I didn’t know which club would join. One day, I randomly decided to join the Rotaract Club from the University of Kelaniya. I don’t know that this decision will change my life in many ways.
At first, I did not know anything about Rotaract or a different road, but I chose the Avenue Club Service as my main road. My first project was Diwali 2023, held at the University of Peradeniya. It was a district-level project, carried out with three other Rotaract clubs-KDU, NSBM, and Kandy. I work as an editor for this project, but I also help in all activities. I will always remember this project because it gives me unforgettable memories. We learn about Hindu culture, establish new friends, and have fun. I would like to thank our compassion director, Lanka Akka and Daran Ayya, for their extraordinary guidance.
My second project is Arogya, organized by Team Elysium under the Rota 4.0 competition. This project is a turning point in my Rotaract journey. It is focused on health and occurs in three phases to support the welfare of the community. I work as a secretary and manage all documents. I also took part in all phases. I established a strong friendship during this project, and I thank Navodody Akki (my mentor) and Pabamini (the leader of my team) for guiding me. Because of their support, I was recognized as the most prominent project secretary, and our team won the best project report award. That’s why this project is so special for me.
The last project I did in my first year was Rota Wasantha Udanaya ’24, where I worked as a co-chairperson. That is a big responsibility, and I have to manage everything from beginning to end. I am proud of how well we are holding the event for our members and students. It is a fun and successful project.
In my second year, I was appointed as a co-directure for members of the road relationship, and that was another big milestone on my Rotaract journey. As a director, I lead with a friendly approach, and many members still come and talk to me every time they see me. I also learned a lot of new skills because of this role.
As Mr Avenue’s Co-Director, I led two extraordinary projects: Rota Rump ’24 and Rota Tomorrow 5.0.
Rota Romp ’24 is a project for member involvement and development. It was my favorite project with the most loving and dedicated OC members. I did not experience pressure during this project because my team was very supportive and motivated. We created so many beautiful and fun memories together.
Rota Tomorrow 5.0 is a large -scale project that focuses on 12 SDG goals. All club members are divided into 12 teams, and each team works on different projects related to one SDG goal. In the end, we held a successful award ceremony with district members and university lecturers. It’s hard to plan, but we do it! I want to thank my special gratitude to my Co-Sutradara Sanduni and our Vice President Himas. Without them, this project will not succeed.
As Director of Relationship of Members, I also manage member registration and update their details about the Indonesian and RMIS portal from the beginning of the year to the end. That is far more responsible compared to being a general member, but I am proud and grateful for the services that I give our club, our members, and the community.
I also want to thank my best friend Amali, Director of PR Racuok. He encouraged me to propose to the board of directors. I did not believe in myself at that time, but he helped me see my potential, and for that, I would always be grateful.
Most importantly, all of this would not happen without the support of my parents – Amma and Thaththa. They play a big role behind the scenes, from helping with project ideas to find sponsors, they are always there for me. Their love really supports my Rotaract journey.
Looking back, this trip has given me so much – experience, memories, leadership skills, and friendship for life. I was really grateful for the day I joined the Rotaract Club in my first year. Now, when our term ended, as well as my journey as a member of the council. I hope the best for the upcoming team and hopes that our club will continue to shine in the future.
