Does Scottie Scheffler play with Caddy Matter?

All 17 wins of PGA Tour Scottie Scheffler, including the four main championships, have come with Ted Scott carrying his bag.

If Scheffler wants to take Win No. 18 In Baltimore, he must do it without his regular caddy. Scott, who took over as a full -time caddy Scheffler at the end of 2021, will lose the BMW championship when he attended a personal problem.

“This is important,” former Caddy PGA Tour Brian Mull told Baltimore Sun about Scott’s absence. “Scottie hasn’t performed very well in several times that Ted has not been available over the past few years.”

Scott missed the final round of the Fedex St. Championship Championship Jude last week, when Scheffler shot 67 and one shot was less than a playoff between Justin Rose and JJ Spaun. Rose finally won the first leg of the Fedex Cup playoff. Brad Payne, a priest of PGA Tour, was filled for Scott on Sunday.

“Brad does a good job, but Brad is a friend, he is not a professional caddy,” Scheffler said, Wednesday.

Scott was also absent from the third round of the PGA championship in 2024 for his daughter’s graduation. Scheffler shot 73 days fell from a fight, even though it also happened a day after he was famous for being arrested. Payne handles Caddy’s task in the third round.

There is a level of expertise from Scott, which also helps guide Bubba Watson to master the victory in 2012 and 2014, which is not owned by a friend. Scheffler became a pro in 2018 but without victory before partnering with Scott, which was seen as one of the best caddies at PGA Tour.

“That friend will not have an authoritative voice and situation command … If you have a correct track record, as Teddy clearly done, then there is confidence there from the player to shot,” Mull said.

Filling this week for Scott is Michael Cromie, Regular Caddy for Chris Kirk. Cromie is available to work this week because Kirk has completed only one place outside the top 50 in the Fedex Cup standings until last weekend, keeping it from the qualifications for the BMW championship.

Cromie is not Scheffler’s ordinary right hand, but has been in Kirk’s bag since 2020 and Caddied for him in two of his six PGA Tour wins.

“I think when you have a professional in a bag, it’s a little different … entering this week, it will be more than a normal routine for me in terms of preparation for shots and things like that,” Scheffler said. “Doing your own numbers, it’s only a few more jobs that do that for four days, and it can be detrimental to you. It is very pleasant for me to be able to walk to the ball, see the shot that I can imagine hitting, and then when the numbers come, we start trying to really call him.”

Mull said that a lot of the success of this week’s duo would likely be bound to preparation. Caves Valley Golf Club is not an ordinary PGA Tour stop – last hosting a professional event in 2021 – which means that golfers and caddies are not familiar with courses than usual. This course also underwent renovations before the tournament this year. Scheffler and Cromie need to work collaboratively to quickly learn courses – and each other – to do their best.

“I will say most of them are only small things … he likes, ‘Hey, what is your hydration? When do you like to eat?’ Only small things like that, “said Scheffler. “I think there are many small things done by Caddies that are not considered throughout the round, and Michael did the best to try and find out those things. I tried to also help remember those things too.”
