MLS may never have a promotion/degradation system, because the owner will never let it happen. Some of these teams are too valuable and expensive in their minds to risk bringing down divisions.
MLS is so that the team leaves from the table to the bottom more often than you think.
LA Galaxy switched from a clear champion to the worst team in MLS. Things can change quickly in MLS, and the degradation system will make the team pay the form of form.

Order levels
For the sake of this hypothetical pro/reg system, we must make a level for the US soccer pyramid. We will not dive into every league, but we will arrange all levels to manage the scene.
MLS will operate as the top league, with the biggest trophy, team, and player in the US. This is no use that Major League Soccer is Tier One. There will be a USL Tier One in a few seasons which can make this hypothetical more interesting.
Level two will be the USL championship, this league is the closest to the wise MLS competition because they play a strong MLS team in the US open trophy.
Level three and four will be the USL League One and USL League two. Level one to three is a professional league, or comparing it with England, they will be in a soccer league as temporarily a fourth level and below are semi-pro, development (the next MLS pro), or college.
Promotional/degradation rules
For this hypothetics (we will review this after the season), we will act as if the table is determined. The bottom three teams will be deployed, similar to other leagues around the world.
For teams under MLS that have a playoff system to determine the championship, we must arrange and set rules.
The three teams will be degraded, the bottom two of the three will be automatic, without any opportunity to stay up so the final season. The third and fourth worst teams in the league will fight in the relegation playoff; Winners must stay up late in their division while others are lowered.
Promotion will work differently compared to other leagues throughout the pool. The top team in the regular season (supporters’ shield) will be automatically promoted to the next league.
They still have to compete in the playoffs to determine the winner of the league. The top team in the playoffs will be promoted to the next level. If the winner of the supporting shield wins the league, then the second and third team will join them at the next level.
If the winner of the Shield supporters is not in the final, it will go to both teams in the championship. For the sake of this hypothetics, we will automatically promote the top three teams in each league.
Who will be sent up and down?
The lower MLS team currently has nothing to play; In this hypothetics, everything changes.
The MLS Cup champion that survived LA Galaxy was at the bottom of the table this season, making them and Montreal sent by both teams. St. Louis will face DC United in the playoffs to fight to determine who remains in the top American soccer league.
LA Galaxy, St. Louis, and Kansas City will be deployed this season. The question is who will be sent from USL.
Charleston Battery will be the top team promoted with FC Tulsa, both of which have the top points at the Eastern and Western conferences in the USL championship. The third team is Louisville City FC, who has the second best record in the league and trailed Charleston with three points.
The three USL teams sent were Tampa Bay Rowdies, who had been at the bottom of the table throughout the season, followed by Hartford Athletic.
Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will compete with Las Vegas Lights FC to determine who is permanent and who is gone. Two other leagues I will not strike today, I will keep it for the end of the season, when all of them are final throughout the league.
What we can do for now is to imagine what it feels like if MLS no longer isolating itself from the entire league in US football to create a true pro -football system. Maybe one day we will have this system, but for now it remains hypothetical.
