Manchester United have appointed Rúben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting Lisbon, as their next manager following the recent sacking of Erik ten Hag. Thus, 39-year-old Amorim will become the third Portuguese to be linked with Manchester United’s coaching staff after Carlos Queiroz and Jose Mourinho.

Moreover, Amorim, who has won two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting, will also be the youngest manager to lead the Red Devils since the 1960s. However, the job is unlikely to be easy, as United have been going through difficult times for some time.

Manchester United are in the bottom half of the Premier League table at the moment:

Manchester United is in 14th place^th place in the current league table. Both Manchester City and Liverpool have opened double-digit leads over United and the gap is likely to widen in the coming days.

In such a scenario, Amorim would find his task doomed from the start. To be honest, the players in United’s squad are no match for Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal or even Chelsea players. Therefore, he should try to bridge the gap as much as possible.

These results are unlikely to be visible immediately, but Amorim must know that he will not be given long to turn things around at Old Trafford. He should at least be able to bring United back to the top of the league standings in the near future.

More importantly, there must be an emphasis on getting the club to play an exciting style of football, which was sorely missing during Ten Hag’s tenure. Manchester United have recently been dominated by even lowly opponents and hardly look like a big team. Amorim must also know that his name alone is not big enough for a big club like United and therefore, he must show his abilities and earn the respect of the players through his playing style.

Amorim’s job is to instill confidence in his team and launch attacks on the opponent. The creativity of players like Bruno Fernandes is not only limited to providing crosses into the penalty box, but there must be an emphasis on involving wingers and strikers more often.

United’s attack has often relied too heavily on the left wing, with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho preferring to play there. Amad Diallo has been impressive on the right, but the club needs more consistency from him.

Then, there’s the double-pivot of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, who combine experience and youth quite well in midfield. It will be up to Amorim to get good performances from his defenders to complement his midfield and ensure that United do not concede a goal in every game. For the record, United have so far conceded 11 goals in nine league matches and only scored eight goals.

United will face some easy games:

United face Chelsea next, which is a tough game, but then face PAOK Athens in the Europa League and will face Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Everton in their next three Premier League games. The club cannot hope for an easier run of games before facing Arsenal in December.

Therefore, United’s decision to appoint the Portuguese without wasting much time appears to be a wise one, as it will give him the opportunity to continue his work with an easier run of fixtures.
