Member Relations Avenue of the University of Kelaniya’s Rotaract Club hosted the highly anticipated annual event, Rota Romp’24 on 19th October 2024 at the Cyril C. Mathew Grounds. The event attracted participants from all walks of the club, showcasing their energy and enthusiasm. The venue was filled with excitement, as participants engaged in various activities designed to foster camaraderie and collaboration among all participants.

Planning for Rota Romp ’24 began months in advance, with dedicated director Rtr. Himas Faizal, Rtr. Kaveesha Dissanayake, Rtr. Sanduni Charundya and the members of the organizing committee worked tirelessly to ensure a memorable experience for everyone involved. Starting from fundraising to the day of the event, the organizing committee gave its maximum contribution and cooperation throughout the month of September to make this event a fun day for the members.

This year’s theme was “Marvel,” and the event was held like a sports competition where each lane was assigned a specific magical character and team name by the Rota Romp ’24 organizing committee.

The Rota Romp ’24 team is:

Prior to the day of the event, the organizing committee held two pre-virtual online games to get members involved on the day of the event.

Rota Romp Day began with a speech from the head of the Rtr project. Navoda Gunarathna and today’s host, Rtr. Amali Nilaksha, Rtr. Harini Nethara and Isuru Vidanapathirana carried out the process. Then as a guest that day, Rtr. Sharan Balasubramaniam delivered the speech and the resource person, Mr. Sanath Bandara, conducted a team building workshop involving members through several games. After that the event continued with the host, each team was given the opportunity to use their creativity, materials such as paint and cloth provided by the organizing committee to make their own team flag.

With that, the hosts along with help from the OC, started the first match of the day. This game is called “Balloon Popping”. Here participants from each team line up and members have to run to the other end, sit down and pop the balloons, then run back. Winners are selected based on the least amount of playing time. The host then played the second game of the day entitled “Aim at the Target”. Here, 8 Rings are provided on a stick. Team members must stand one after another and hold hands. The first member takes the ring from the stick while grabbing his opponent’s hand. Once finished, players run to the end of the line to end the task.

After that, three exciting games were held, namely “lava walk”, “fill the bucket”, “throw the ball”, and a lunch break was also given. Then, a game for the organizing committee and a game called “Treasure Hunt” were held for the club directors. In a treasure hunt game, the host announces the name of some random item in the area and the director tries to find it and returns to the chair with the specified item with them. With that match, the day’s competition ended.

When the day was over, Rtr. Vihanga Divyanjana, President of the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya, shared a few words about today’s important event and the importance of participating in the event. Next, the event reached its peak where the winning team of Rota Romp ’24 was announced. The winning team of Rota Romp ’24 is Team Hulk (Team Mighty Giants) led by Community Service Avenue. The Captain America team (Blue Sheilders) led by International Service Avenue was awarded as Runners Up Rota Romp ’24. Each road has the opportunity to get several prizes for its achievements.

After thanks delivered by Rtr. Sanduni Charundya, the event officially ended marking the end of an incredibly fun day with a stunning DJ hour with music, lights and a vibrant atmosphere creating the perfect closing experience for Rota Romp ’24. All participants left the location with smiles on their faces and happy memories in their hearts.

Rota Romp ’24 was truly a celebration of unity, energy and joy. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the directors and organizing committee, the event ran smoothly, making it an enjoyable experience for all who attended. This year’s success has set the bar high for future editions of the Rota Romp, and it is clear that this event will continue to be a highlight in the Rotaract Club calendar for years to come!
