The 125th edition of the Army-Navy Game will take place in Landover on Saturday in one of the most anticipated matchups in the history of the rivalry.
It’s an annual contest steeped in tradition, from the pre-game ceremonies to the style of play on the field. One recent addition to the fanfare is the introduction of special uniforms in which both sides wear unique alternate looks to commemorate the service of their respective branches of the military.
Navy has played its part with a variety of looks over the years, starting with Nike-designed alternate jerseys in 2008 and expanding to head-to-toe makeovers made by their current manufacturer, Under Armour, in recent seasons.
Here’s a ranking of the top 10 uniforms Cadets will wear against Army ahead of the 2024 contest.

10. 2014 — ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ Uniform
This set is Under Armour’s debut uniform for Army-Navy in the annual Nike (Army) vs. Navy contest. Under Armor (Navy). This alternative is inspired by the First Navy Jack flag with red and white stripes on the sleeves, helmet and trousers. The stripes are a little overdone, which drops them in this ranking, but the uniforms make the top 10 for their originality.

9. 2015 — Mono-blue uniform with gray accents and gold trim
This uniform is included in the list of helmets only. The Navy debuted a specially painted cap for the first time with an aircraft carrier patrolling open waters decorated on both sides. The all-blue look is solid, but the gold trim makes the overall design a little blocky.

8. 2022 — Astronaut suits
As a tribute to the Naval Academy alumnus who went on to work for NASA, the astronaut-inspired white uniforms feature blue numbers and red stripes. The helmet is another masterpiece with the NASA logo painted over the moon on one side and Annapolis graduate Bruce McCandless II in a spacesuit with the Earth behind him on the other side.

7. 2021 — ‘Fly Navy’ Uniform
Another custom painted helmet here with Cadets pays homage to the F/A 18 Super Hornet fighter plane flown by Navy pilots. The circular symbol, an insignia displayed on aircraft across all branches of the U.S. military, is featured prominently on the shoulder of the red, white and blue patriotic display.

6. 2011 — First Nike Pro Combat uniform
Heralded at the time as the football uniform of the future, the Nike Pro Combat series was not only Army-Navy specific, but the Midshipmen had one of the best designs of the group. The all-blue jersey/pants combination with gold numbers and a white helmet is a fresh classic look, especially for the helmet which has a gold stenciled anchor on the white.

5. 2013 – War of 1812 uniform
Two hundred years after 1813, the bloodiest of the four years of the War of 1812, both the Army and Navy drew inspiration for their uniforms from the soldiers who fought in that conflict. In the final year Nike produced their jerseys, the Navy wore blue jerseys emblazoned with Navy Captain James Lawrence’s final command: “Don’t give up on the ship.” The tri-color helmet with chrome gold stripes on the sides is a fan favorite. It also snows on game day, which makes the entire uniform look even cooler.

4. 2018 — “Bill the Goat” uniform.
There’s nothing crazy about the Navy uniform here, but the classic white-on-white look is perfectly executed with blue and gold stripes on the pants and a similar style on the shoulders. The helmet pays homage to the Cadets’ long-time mascot, Bill the Goat, with the iconic logo on the side of the chrome blue cap.

3. 2023 — “Silent Service” Uniforms.
Call it recency bias, but last year’s uniforms made the top three for their navy blue theme as opposed to the Army’s desert-inspired look. Designed to honor the Navy’s “Silent Service” submarine force, Under Armor created a special shade of blue for the uniforms dubbed “Eclipse Navy.” The painted helmet has a Virginia Class submarine on one side, which is almost as cool as the color-changing paint used for Navy anchors on the other side that mimics the look of a submarine’s radar system when they lock on to a target.

2. 2017 — Blue Angels uniform
Royal blue may or may not be a great choice on a football uniform, but Navy mixes it up by using striking gold trim along the sides for an overall sleek look. Like most of the uniforms on this list, the helmet is the crown jewel of the F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets previously flown by the Blue Angels, the Navy’s premier aviation team, on the sides and top.

1. 2020 — Navy 175th Anniversary Uniform
Celebrating the academy’s 175th anniversary, the Marines wore white jerseys and white pants with blue and white marble helmets representing the stones that can be found in prominent locations on campus, including the John Paul Jones crypt and Bancroft Hall. It’s a unique look that has style and meaning, earning it the No. 1 spot. 1 in this ranking.
