24 October – Liverpool FC have unveiled German sportswear company Adidas as the club’s new kit supplier in a deal expected to generate around £60 million per year.
Adidas will replace their current supplier, Nike, next season.
In negotiations over the right to supply products to the five-time European champions, Adidas is up against Nike, and offers from fellow German retailer, and arch-rival, Puma. Adidas last defended the Reds between 2006 and 2012.
The contract is for five years and the power brokers at Anfield believe their kit earnings will be on par with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, who each earned £60-65m from deals with Adidas, Puma and Nike. .
The current deal with Nike is guaranteed to be worth £30 million a year, not including shirt sales. With the addition of commercial related assets, performance related bonuses and a 20% royalty payment on net sales of sportswear replicas, the figure is believed to be worth almost £60 million per season.
The jersey sales business is a very profitable market. Previous deals have seen Adidas pay Real Madrid, £816 million over 8 years, while Nike has paid PSG, and Chelsea, £888.94 million, and almost £900 million respectively.
The current jersey deal record holder, much to Liverpool’s dismay, is held by their fiercest rivals, Manchester United who will receive £906 million (about $1.15 billion) over 10 years from Adidas.
Liverpool, who currently sit top of the Premier League will be hoping to add to their 19 league titles and draw level with the red team of Manchester who hold a record of 20 titles.
