Board game fans will be eager to have fun with our Nintendo friends Super Mario Party: Jamboree. Available on Nintendo Switch, this game features a ton of activities that are sure to please everyone. You’ll even find interactive games that use Joy-Con motion controls. With twenty-two playable characters, seven main boards, and over 110 mini-games, this is Nintendo’s most ambitious Super Mario Party game to date. This is my review.

For years, the Mario Party franchise has provided the opportunity to have fun with friends playing virtual board games. One of the features of the Nintendo Switch console allows sharing Joy-Con controllers for dynamic gameplay. With Super Mario Party Jamboree, in addition to being able to play in teams of four at home, up to twenty players can compete online against Bowser. What more could you ask for? This game offers many ways to have fun. There are traditional board games, as well as an island with various activities.

Fun Mario Party game

The main game includes seven game boards where players choose their favorite characters and compete happily. The classic mechanics remain simple. Players take turns rolling the dice, and the player who ends the game with the most stars wins. Along the way, there are mini-games, item shops and other special spaces waiting for us. This iteration includes up to 110 mini-games, which means I rarely play the same mini-game in one playthrough.

A new feature introduced in this game is the addition of random characters during game play. This “Jamboree” will accompany the player who reaches it on the game board for several rounds and will offer bonuses based on his identity. For example, Yoshi can copy items, and Wario gives players additional coins each turn. Accompanied by this second character, the items obtained also double, and if someone reaches a star, they can purchase two if they have enough coins.

Whether playing in classic or pro mode with customizable rules, Mario Party is at the heart of the game. This is what brings me back to this series with each iteration with my friends. This new version introduces Pauline and Ninji, further diversifying the selection of playable characters. All the boards are different. Some will have special features. For example, in a shopping center there is a sale. During this turn, items purchased are half price, even the stars!

Central Plaza is the heart of the action

Super Mario Party: Jamboree

Central Plaza includes shops where you can spend your earned points. Fans can earn customizable cards, emotes, unlock the game’s music, or earn items to decorate the area. This is where the hot air balloon is located which will take us to the next activity. Plus, keep an eye out for photography opportunities! In the data house, you can admire it and see what you missed.

Some islands offer non-competitive activities. For example, the Frog Factory launches us into the marble game that ultimately helps create decorative items for the central square. In Aerial Adventures, we attach wings to our character’s arms. By flapping a Joy-Con in each hand, we completed the tasks on offer. We can also complete quests on Volcanic Island, where tidal currents must be considered to decide when to move. Lastly, the Rhythm Cooking activity tests our ability to manage time. These activities were definitely fun once or twice, but they weren’t what drew me back to Super Mario Party: Jamboree.

Have fun with friends in exclusive multiplayer activities

Multiplayer activities in Super Mario Party: Jamboree

While most activities can be played solo if desired, two activities focus on multiplayer gameplay. They feature the evil Bowser in a bad mood.

Firstly, Koopathlon is a competition for twenty players, a first in the Mario Party series. The goal is to cross the finish line first. To achieve this, we complete a series of mini-games, where our performance counts towards our progress on the leaderboard. Next, the game Bowser’s Brigade brings together eight players, this time in cooperative mode against the famous Bowser. The idea is to destroy the box containing the bomb. By taking them to the cannon, we can finally defeat Bowser. However, he would not give up easily. He will chase us and try to burn us with his devastating breath. He will also have allies who will gladly attack us to cripple the troops. These games are fun. I prefer Koopathlon because we play on a board. Therefore we stay true to the spirit of Mario Party with a different twist.

Super Mario Party: Jamboree is a lot of fun

Super Mario Party: Jamboree is a great addition to the series. I really enjoy the variety of game boards. Being able to play at home or with online players means fans will enjoy the game for a long time. I don’t think I’ll return to the side activities after completing them, but they add different mechanics from the main game. The title is still complete, and the wide variety of mini-games makes it a great buy for fans of the Mario Party franchise on Nintendo Switch.
