November 20 – Michele Kang, owner of the Washington Spirit who play in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has donated $30 million to the US federation’s women’s and girls’ programs according to United States Soccer (USSF).
This enormous donation will help increase competitive opportunities for young players, increase talent identification and encourage professional development, according to a USSF news release.
This windfall will enable the Federation to double the number of national team camps for its youth teams to six per year as well as provide development opportunities to an additional 70,000 female coaches and referees.
The donation by Kang, whose growing portfolio of clubs includes Lyon in France and London City Lionesses in England, is the largest donation ever made by a woman to the USSF.
Kang said: “Women’s sport has been undervalued and ignored for too long. I am committed to raising the standard of excellence in women’s football – both on and off the field – by providing female athletes with the resources they need to reach their full potential and providing the professional support they deserve. I hope this investment can serve as ‘start-up capital’ and encourage other donors to do the same.”
Cindy Parlow Cone, President of US Soccer added: “Michele Kang’s gift will transform soccer for women and girls in the United States.
“This will impact generations of women and girls in our game, including players, coaches and referees. I know firsthand the power of football in a person’s life and thanks to Michele, we will be able to provide more support and opportunities for women and girls.”
New USWNT boss Emma Hayes was also impressed, saying it had the potential to “change the course of the sport.”
The deep-pocketed Kang recently announced a $50 million global investment in improving the health of elite female athletes by launching Kynisca Sports International Ltd, the first organization to focus exclusively on women’s soccer across teams.
