2 December – Ten-man Botafogo clinched their first Copa Libertadores with a 3-1 win against Atletico Mineiro in a gripping final in Buenos Aires on Saturday.
For 88 minutes Botafogo played with 10 men, but in a strange twist of fate, Gregore’s red card in the second minute proved to be a blessing in disguise for the Rio club. They only had 20% possession and completed a meager 145 passes and still came out on top.
Botafogo suffered a poor start when Gregore was sent off for a high kick on his opponent, but even with the numerical advantage, Atletico Mineiro were too weak to repel the opponent’s back line of six players. In ten games without a win, they lacked confidence many times looking for striker Hulk to make the difference.
It wasn’t good enough and the Rio club punished Atletico in brutal fashion.
From close range, Luiz Henrique scored in the 35th minute with a neat finish. The striker was then brought down in the box by Atletico goalkeeper Everson, resulting in a penalty. Alex Telles converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute to give his team a two-goal lead.
Atletico manager Gabriel Milito made a first-half change and substitute Eduardo Vargas was both hero and anti-hero. With a header, he pulled a goal back for his team. The final became competitive again with the Belo Horizonte club gaining momentum. Vargas, however, wasted two big chances that would have seen Atletico Mineiro take the match to extra time. In his side image, he is often too restless and hasty.
Hulk’s legs were tired and Atletico were out of options. Instead, it was Botafogo and Junior Santos who had the final say with a late third goal to cap off a historic night for the Carioca side.
Manager Arthur Jorge called it an ‘epic win’. This is the third consecutive time a club from Rio de Janeiro has won the continental prize after Fluminense in 2023 and Flamengo in 2022. Botafogo earned $23 million in prize money.
More importantly, they claimed a ticket to the 32-team Club World Cup in the United States. Botafogo will also represent South America in the Intercontinental Cup. On December 11, they will play Pachuca of Mexico in Doha, Qatar.
