A member of the FIFA Council and member of the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Touré has led the Mali FA (Femafoot) since 2019, but he was arrested last year on charges of embezzlement of funds during his tenure at the financial and administrative body. director at the National Assembly of Mali.

These 17 months of detention, without the possibility of obtaining temporary release, have prevented me from fully investing myself in my duties and in preparing for the renewal of my mandate on the FIFA Council.”
He added: “This carefully considered decision was not easy to take. But it shows my desire to pave the way for a peaceful future and a fully operational government, in the best interests of our institutions and the values we share.”
In March, the CAF Congress in Cairo will elect new members of the executive committee as well as African representatives to the FIFA Council.
