It’s been almost eleven years since the last Killzone game was released, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change any time soon. Art Director Roy Postma, a Guerrilla veteran who has worked at the Dutch studio since its founding, told The Washington Post emphatically that the developer believes Horizon’s theme is much more appealing to a larger audience.
We’ve done it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette. Because of the options, it is the opposite of ‘Killzone’. I think the themes represented by this story and characters are relatable to all ages and people, such as finding family friends and finding your place in the world.
While there is some truth to that assessment, and Horizon certainly brought much greater success to Guerrilla, Killzone also gained a lot of fans, through four main series and two spin-offs developed for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita. The unique ‘Nazi sci-fi’ setting may require much greater narrative development than we’ve seen in the games.
Sony has been very active in remastering its previous games, and it will be interesting to see how many players will get their hands on the Killzone: Shadow Fall remaster for PlayStation 5 and PC. The game certainly still looks great today and will shine even brighter on new hardware.
Meanwhile, Guerrilla is completely focused on Horizon. They will launch LEGO Horizon Adventures, a spin-off action/adventure game targeted at a younger audience. This title, co-developed with Studio Gobo, will soon launch on PC and Nintendo Switch in addition to PlayStation 5, and there’s also cooperative multiplayer for the first time in the franchise (while Guerrilla is mostly working on a full Horizon multiplayer game).
Next week, Nixxes will also release the controversial Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
