AirTag 2 Will Get an Improved Ultrawide Band Chip, Allowing Tracker Range to Triple When Searching for Lost or Misplaced Items

Apple will reportedly improve the AirTag 2 when it is announced next year, bringing a wave of upgrades that will improve its capabilities compared to the current generation version. The main change is the inclusion of a new ultra-wideband chip that will increase the device’s item tracking range by threefold, allowing users to locate their lost or misplaced items from a significant distance.

The improved ultra-wideband chip in the AirTag 2 is reportedly on par with the one running in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16

While the AirTag 2 will get an ultra-wideband chip upgrade, Apple won’t be releasing anything truly new for it. According to Mark Gurman, writing in his latest ‘Power On’ newsletter, the ultra-wideband chips that will be found in next year’s trackers are ‘on par’ with those used in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series. This change will bring major benefits, namely increased range. Other details are given below.

“I’ve reported several times that Apple is preparing a new AirTag for next year, an upgrade that improves the built-in wireless chip and security features. I can now say that the next AirTag will get a new ultra-wideband chip on par with the one introduced in the iPhone 15. This will greatly increase the range of the new AirTag, meaning it will be easier to find any item you like. already attached it to. Currently, AirTags can be found with Precision Finding from a distance of around 10 to 30 meters, depending on conditions. I’m told this new model will double that by using next-generation ultra-wideband chips.”

The report doesn’t say whether the upgrade to the ultra-wideband chip will increase the price of the AirTag 2, but with the increased item tracking range, Apple will likely sell it in large quantities despite charging customers a premium. For now, if you’re comfortable with a first-generation AirTag capable of a 10-meter range, the 4-pack is currently available for just $72.99 on Amazon, making it one of the lowest prices for this bundle. Alternatively, if you just need one of these trackers, you can get it for $24.
